I am an ex-sailor who was born an Army brat, and has lived in or visited many countries as well as many parts of the U.S. Because of this, I have grown up with a thirst for learning about new cultures. In fact, my main hobby is learning: I have a Nuclear Power certification from the U.S. Navy, a BA in English, an MS in Information Science, an MS in English, and a Graduate Certificate in Technical Writing. My next goals are certificates in Online Teaching, Virtual Worlds, and Astrobiology, and eventually an MS in Physics. I have worked over the years as a Navy electrician and Navy nuclear engineering technician, a university Web master, a Systems Librarian, and a Director of Integrated Technology. Presently I am employed as a full-time Instructor of English (teaching traditional and online classes) and the Technology Coordinator for my university's School of Language and Literature.
My literary research interests are: Medieval (especially MacBeth and anything by Marie de France), Gothic (especially Edgar Allan Poe), Charles Dickens (A Christmas Carol), and Science Fiction.
My pedagogical research interests include the use of video games, virtual worlds (Second Life), and Web 2.0 and 3.0 for composition, rhetoric and literary instruction. My Second Life avatars are Martian Nakamura (seen pictured on the left) and the more recent Scrooge Frostbite.
And, when I have the time, I enjoy researching that enduring question "are we alone in the Universe?" and blogging about it in my Alien Realities blog.
